Chapter 3 – The Truth Breaks Everything
I was still his wife, but I was no longer his world. That thought stayed in my mind every day after that. I stopped asking too many questions, not because I trusted him, but because I was afraid of what I might hear. I kept the café receipt hidden in my drawer. Sometimes I took it out and looked at it, then folded it again and put it back. I told myself maybe there was a simple reason. Maybe I was wrong. But deep inside, I knew something was not right.
A few days later, Olivia came to see me. She looked at me for a long time and did not smile. She said softly, “Grace, you don’t look happy.” I tried to act normal and said I was just tired from work, but she did not believe me. She sat next to me and held my hand. “Love should not feel like this,” she said. Her words stayed with me long after she left.
One afternoon, I decided to go out for a walk. I wanted some fresh air. I did not plan anything. I just walked without thinking. Somehow, I reached the street near Ethan’s office. That was when I saw him. He was standing outside the building, talking to someone.A woman.
She was smiling, and he was smiling too. Not the tired, small smile he gave me at home, but a real smile. He looked relaxed. Happy. Alive. They stood close to each other. She touched his arm while laughing, and he did not move away. I felt something break inside me at that moment. My chest became tight, and I could not breathe properly.
I stood there for a few seconds, unable to move. I wanted to call his name, but no sound came out. Then I turned around and walked away slowly. Every step felt heavy. I did not cry on the street. I just felt empty.
That night, I waited for him again. When he came home, I was sitting on the sofa. The room was quiet. My hands were cold, but my mind was clear.“Ethan,” I said, “who is she?”
He stopped for a moment and looked at me. “Who?” he asked“The woman from your office. The one you were with today,” I said.He stayed silent for a second, then looked away. That silence gave me my answer.“She’s just a coworker,” he said.
I shook my head slowly. “Don’t lie to me. I saw how you looked at her.”His face became serious. “Grace, I don’t want to fight.”“I’m not fighting,” I said. “I just want the truth.”
He sat down, but he did not look at me. “There is nothing you need to worry about,” he said, but his voice sounded distant.
After that night, the house felt even colder. We spoke less than before. He avoided me, and I stopped trying to fix things. I felt tired all the time. It was like I was losing him slowly, even though he was still there.
Then one evening, everything changed.
It was very late. I was sitting in the living room again, waiting. The clock showed 11:40 PM. When the door opened, Ethan walked in quietly. He did not say hello. He did not look at me. He walked to the sofa and sat down, still wearing his shoes.
Something felt wrong. Very wrong. “Ethan…” I said softly. He took a deep breath and finally looked at me. His eyes were serious.“Grace, I can’t do this anymore,” he said.
My heart started beating fast. “Do what?” I asked.“This marriage,” he replied. The words felt heavy. I could not believe what I was hearing.“What are you saying?” I whispered. He looked down. “I don’t feel the same anymore.”Tears filled my eyes. “Is there someone else?” I asked.
He did not answer, but his silence said everything.“Please,” I said, “tell me the truth.”He closed his eyes for a moment. “Yes,” he said quietly.I felt like my world stopped. I could not breathe. My hands started shaking.“Who is she?” I asked.
“Maya,” he said. “We knew each other before. We met again at work.”Everything became clear. The late nights. The messages. The distance.“How long?” I asked.“For some time,” he said, avoiding my eyes.
I started crying. “Ethan, we can fix this. Please. Remember us? Our wedding? You promised me…”He shook his head. “I tried, Grace. But it’s not working.” “It can work,” I said. “We just need time. We can try again.”
But his face did not change.“I don’t want to try,” he said. Those words broke something inside me completely.I moved closer and held his hand. “Please don’t do this,” I said softly. “Don’t throw everything away.”
He slowly pulled his hand back.“It’s already gone,” he said. Tears ran down my face. “What about me?” I asked.
He stood up and said, “I want a divorce.”
The room felt empty. I sat there, unable to move. I could not think clearly. Everything felt unreal.
That night, he slept in the other room. I sat in the hallway, with my back against the wall, and cried until morning. My chest hurt, but I could not stop.
The next weeks passed like a blur. We went to lawyers. We signed papers. Ethan was calm, almost cold. He did everything quickly, like it meant nothing to him.
I packed my things into one suitcase and two boxes. When I left the house, I looked back one last time. That place was once my home. Now it felt like a stranger’s house.I moved into a small studio apartment. It was quiet. Too quiet.
One night, I stood in front of the mirror and looked at myself for a long time. My eyes looked tired. My face looked different.
I whispered softly, “What did she have that I didn’t?” There was no answer.Ethan left like I was nothing. And slowly, I started believing that maybe I was nothing.
