CHAPTER 1 – BEFORE I KNEW THE TRUTH
Lena Brooks was twenty years old. She lived with her parents in a small but peaceful home. Her mother always said one thing to her, “Lena, do not trust people too fast. Your heart is soft, and the world is not.” Lena always smiled when she heard this, but she never understood the depth of those words. She thought everyone was kind. She thought everyone spoke the truth. She did not know life was waiting to teach her the hardest lesson.
Their family had a helper named Tyler Reed. He was twenty-four, quiet, and lonely. He came early in the morning and did all the work without complaining. He fixed broken things, carried heavy boxes, cleaned the yard, and helped her father with small repairs. But there was something strange about him. His eyes always looked sad, like he carried a story he never wanted to tell anyone. Lena noticed this many times, and sometimes she even felt his eyes following her when she walked through the house. She tried to ignore it. She told herself she was imagining things.
One evening, Lena came home from college. She was tired, so she went straight to her room. She pushed the door but forgot to close it properly. She stood in front of her mirror and changed her clothes. When she turned around, she saw Tyler standing at her door. He was not speaking. He was just staring. Her heart jumped. She felt something heavy in her chest. “Tyler,” she said softly, “you scared me. Why are you here?” He smiled in a strange way, something she had never seen before. “I thought you called me,” he said. But she never called him. She knew it. He knew it. Still, she kept quiet. Her throat felt tight. She wanted to say something, but the words did not come. He walked away like nothing happened. Lena stood frozen. She felt something was wrong, but she pushed the thought away.
The next day, she watched him again. He worked normally. He spoke normally. But sometimes he looked at her with a softness that made her uncomfortable. Her mother noticed Lena was quiet that week. “Are you okay, sweetheart?” she asked. Lena forced a smile and said, “Yes, Mom, I’m fine.” But she was not fine. Inside her heart, a small fear was growing, a fear she did not understand.
Tyler started talking to her more often. He would say small things like “You look tired today,” or “You are very kind, you know that?” His words were soft, but there was a hidden weight in them. Lena did not know how to react. She tried to stay away, but he found ways to be near her. Sometimes he helped her carry books. Sometimes he gave her small compliments that made her confused. She did not want to be rude. She did not want to hurt him. But something inside her whispered, “Be careful, Lena.”
One afternoon, she was sitting alone at the dining table, thinking about her life, her dreams, her future. She wanted a simple life. She wanted peace. She wanted a good man who respected her. That moment, Tyler walked in and said, “You look sad today.” His voice was calm. Lena looked up and said, “No, I’m just thinking.” He sat across her and gave a small smile. “You are different from other girls,” he said. “You have a good heart.” Lena felt uncomfortable but did not show it. She just nodded.
Every night, she remembered her mother’s words. Do not trust people too fast. Slowly, those words started to make sense. Slowly, she began to feel something was not right. Slowly, she realized Tyler was watching her more than he should. But she did not want to believe it. She wanted to think he was just being friendly. She wanted to think everything was normal.
But deep inside, she knew her life was about to change.
She did not know how.
She did not know when.
She only knew one thing—
something was coming toward her, something she was not ready for.
And this was only the beginning.
