Chapter 1 – The Stranger at My Door
That night changed everything. I was sitting alone, thinking about my parents, when I heard a sudden knock. It was slow, not loud, but it made my heart jump. I walked to the door and opened it carefully. A man was standing there. His hair was wet, and his eyes looked tired but kind. He said in a soft voice, “Sorry to trouble you. My car broke down outside. May I use your phone?” I looked at him for a few seconds. He seemed polite. Something about him felt safe. I said, “Yes, come in.” He smiled slightly and said, “Thank you. I promise I won’t take long.”
He stood near the small table and made a call. His voice was calm, almost careful. “Yes, I’m safe. Just near a house. Someone kind helped me,” he said. Then he hung up and turned toward me. “I’m Victor,” he said quietly. “You must be wondering why I’m out here so late.” I said, “It happens. I’m Anna.” For a few moments, we just looked at each other. He said, “It’s a lovely home. Feels peaceful here.” I smiled and said, “It was my parents’. I’ve lived here since I was a child.” He nodded slowly and said, “A house with love never dies.” That line touched me more than I wanted to admit.
We talked a little while. His way of speaking was simple, but he chose his words carefully. He told me he moved to this town a week ago. He said he wanted a quiet life after years of travel. He asked about my work, my family, and my days. I told him I lived alone. His eyes softened. “Alone?” he asked. “Yes,” I said. “But I’ve learned peace in silence.” He said, “Peace is rare. You’re lucky.” Then he looked down and smiled like he was hiding something. That small look stayed in my mind.
Thirty minutes passed fast. His car was fixed, and he was ready to leave. He said, “You helped a stranger tonight. Thank you, Anna. I’ll return the favor one day.” I laughed and said, “Just drive safe.” He smiled, but before turning away, he looked again at the house. His eyes stayed on the walls, the door, and the windows. “Old houses have secrets,” he whispered. “I hope yours always keeps you safe.” His words were strange, but I didn’t ask what he meant.
After he left, I stood at the door for a long time. The house was quiet again, but something inside me felt different. His voice still echoed in my ears. “Old houses have secrets.” What did he mean? Why did he look around like he knew something I didn’t? I tried to brush it away, but my heart didn’t agree. Sometimes, the first meeting is not luck. Sometimes, it is the start of a story that tests everything you believe.
That night, I didn’t sleep much. I kept hearing that slow knock in my head. It was as if the house remembered it too. I told myself it was nothing. I didn’t know that the man I helped was about to change my life forever.
