CHAPTER 1 – THE DOOR WITH NO NAME

Amara Quinn sat in a small chair. The room was simple. She had no big sign outside, only a desk and one old telephone. She looked at the empty wall and said to herself that she was starting a new life. People in Riverbend had already heard that she had opened a detective agency. Some laughed and said a woman could not do this work. Some said the town was too quiet for such a place. But Amara knew one truth: every town had secrets.

Her heart was heavy but strong. She had lost her husband years ago, and for many months she had lived with only sadness. But today she wanted a new start. She thought that even if one person came for help, her agency would have meaning.

The door opened without a knock. A young woman stepped in, holding her bag tight. She looked nervous. Amara asked her softly who she was looking for. The woman smiled and said she was looking for work. She introduced herself as Verena Blake. She explained that she was a single mother. She needed money for her little boy. She said she could type, write, and even help with calls.

Amara looked at her face and felt a strange peace. She said she could not pay much now. Verena answered that she did not care, she just wanted to work and learn. Amara gave a small smile and said they could start together. From that moment, Verena became her helper.

The two women sat together for a while. Amara told Verena that detectives do not only look for big criminals. They also listen to small problems. She said that sometimes the smallest lie can hurt the biggest heart. Verena nodded. She said she wanted to learn and she was ready to stand with Amara.

Hours passed and no one came. Amara began to feel a little doubt. But just before evening, the door opened again. A man entered slowly. His hands shook as he held his hat. He asked if this was the detective agency. Amara said yes and offered him a seat. Verena gave him a glass of water.

The man introduced himself as Mr. James. His voice was low. He explained that he had a friend who was sick. This friend had gone to Doctor Peterson’s clinic. The bills were too high, and the medicines were strange. He believed something was wrong inside that clinic. He asked if Amara could find the truth.

Amara looked at Verena, and Verena looked back with wide eyes. It was their first day, and already a case had come. Amara leaned forward and asked Mr. James why he thought the doctor was lying. He whispered that many families had the same story. The doctor was trusted, but the money and medicines did not make sense.

Verena asked in a soft voice if he was sure. She said she found it hard to believe that a man of medicine could do such things. Mr. James answered that he had no proof, only doubt. But he could not sleep at night thinking about it.

Amara took her pen and wrote a few notes. She asked Mr. James to leave the bills and the medicine papers with her. He nodded and left them on the desk. He thanked her and said she was his last hope.

After he left, silence filled the room. Verena whispered that this was too big for their first case. She asked how they could fight against a respected doctor. Amara placed her hand on the desk and said that truth does not care about power. She said that even a doctor must answer when his hands are dirty.

Verena watched her new partner with respect. She felt she had made the right choice by coming here. She said she would stand with Amara. Amara looked at her and gave a small smile. She said they would start the next morning.

The telephone did not ring. The desk was still old. The sign outside was still missing. But in that small room, two women had found purpose. They had a client, and they had a secret to uncover.

Amara looked at the papers again and spoke quietly. She said that every lie wears clothes of truth, but if you keep looking, the clothes will fall away. Verena listened and felt a shiver of curiosity. She asked what if the doctor really was cheating sick people. Amara answered that then Riverbend was not as quiet as people thought.

The day ended with new hope. The first step of the Riverbend Detective Agency had been taken. The doctor’s secret was waiting. The door had no name, but now it had a story.
