Chapter 1 – The Broken Trust

Loretta was sixty-eight. She was an old woman. She had white hair and tired eyes. She lived with her husband Calvin, who was seventy-two. They had been married for more than forty years. Loretta gave all her life to him. She cooked for him. She cared for him. She never spoke to any other man. She always said to herself, “My husband is my world.”

But Calvin started to change. His heart was full of doubt. He looked at Loretta with anger. One evening he said, “I know the truth. You meet another man when you go out.” Loretta’s hands shook. She said, “No, Calvin. That is not true. I only love you. I have never betrayed you.”

Calvin did not listen. His face was hard. He said, “Do not lie to me. I see the way you act. You are not the same wife I married.” Loretta cried. Tears ran down her face. She begged, “Please trust me. I am still your wife. I have nothing to hide.” But Calvin turned away. His eyes were cold.

Days passed. The house was full of silence. Loretta tried to speak softly to him. She said, “I made your favorite dish.” But Calvin pushed the plate away. She said, “Sit with me for a while.” But he walked to the other room. Every small act broke Loretta more. She asked herself, “Why is my love not enough? Why can he not see my heart?”

One night, Calvin raised his voice. “I do not want this life with you. You are unfaithful. You are not the woman I once trusted.” Loretta fell to the floor and cried, “Please, do not say this. I gave you my whole life. I am innocent.” Calvin shouted, “Enough! I want divorce.”

Loretta’s body shook. She said, “After forty years? After all my love?” Her voice cracked. But Calvin did not stop. He brought papers and threw them on the table. “Sign this,” he said. Loretta held the pen with shaking fingers. She whispered, “I never thought this day would come.” But she signed, not because she wanted to, but because her heart had no strength to fight anymore.

The next morning, Loretta sat alone. She looked at her wedding ring. She held it close to her chest and whispered, “I am still your wife in my heart. Why did you leave me?” She cried until her body was weak. Her tears had no end.

She called her son Daniel and her daughter Ruth. She told them, “Your father left me. He said I betrayed him. But I swear to you, I never did.” Daniel was silent. Then he said, “Mother, maybe you hide something.” Ruth added, “Father cannot be wrong without reason.” Loretta felt her heart break again. She shouted, “I am your mother. Do you not trust me?” But they did not answer. A few weeks later, Daniel moved to Canada. Ruth went to Australia. Loretta was left with no one.

Every night she sat with old photos. She looked at the smiling faces of her family. She touched the pictures with her fingers. She whispered, “We were happy once. Why did you leave me?” Her pillow became wet with tears. She prayed, “God, you know my truth. Please give me strength.”

People in the town started to talk. Some said, “She must have done something bad. Why would her husband leave her at this age?” Loretta heard their whispers. Her heart broke more. She wanted to scream, “I am innocent!” But no one listened. She carried shame on her shoulders.

Days turned into weeks. Weeks turned into months. Loretta’s face grew tired, but her heart still hoped. She said to herself again and again, “One day the truth will come. One day they will see who I am.” She was broken, but inside her pain, a small fire still lived.
