Chapter 6 – Learning to Rise Again
Ava woke the next day with a heavy heart. The note from her father still sat in her mind like a stone. She felt small again. She felt lost again. She wanted to hide. But when she looked at Daniel beside her, she felt a soft pull toward hope. She touched his hand lightly. He opened his eyes and smiled. “Good morning,” he said. Ava tried to smile back. But her eyes showed her pain. Daniel looked at her gently and said, “Come here.” She moved closer, and he held her quietly. She whispered, “I want to be stronger.” He whispered back, “You are stronger than you think.”
They sat in silence for a long moment. Ava finally said, “I want to move forward. I just do not know how.” Daniel held her hand. “Move one small step at a time,” he said. Ava nodded, even though her heart still shook a little. She wanted to rise. She wanted to breathe without fear. She wanted to let go of the old wound that said everyone leaves. She whispered, “Teach me.” Daniel smiled softly. “We learn together.”
Ava decided to do one brave thing that day. She told Daniel, “I will look for a new job.” She said it with a scared voice, but Daniel understood. “I am proud of you,” he said. Ava felt her chest warm. It had been years since she heard those words. She felt a tiny spark of strength. She sat at the table with her laptop and whispered, “I can try.” Daniel kissed her forehead and said, “Trying is winning.”
As she searched, Ava stopped suddenly and said, “What if they see my fear?” Daniel answered, “Then tell them you are healing.” Ava looked at him with wet eyes. “Will they still accept me?” Daniel gave a soft smile. “Maybe yes. Maybe no. But I accept you. And that matters first.” His voice felt like comfort in her bones. She breathed slow and kept going.
Later that evening, she sat beside Daniel. She leaned her head on his shoulder and whispered, “I am scared of failing.” He held her hand and said, “Failing is not the end. Stopping is the end. And you did not stop.” Ava felt her heart soften. She said, “I do not want to go backward.” Daniel whispered, “You will not. You came too far.”
She slowly realized something important. Fear was still there. Pain was still there. But she was not alone with it anymore. She had someone who stayed. Someone who cared. Someone who believed in her more than she believed in herself. She touched Daniel’s hand and said softly, “Thank you for holding me when I fall.” He whispered, “I will hold you every time.”
That night, Ava sat with herself for a long time. She thought of her father. She thought of her past. She thought of all the moments that broke her. Then she thought of Daniel. She thought of every gentle word he had spoken. Every patient look. Every soft promise. And she whispered, “I can rise again.” She felt it for the first time. A quiet strength growing inside her.
She looked at Daniel and said, “Tomorrow, I will try again.” He smiled and whispered, “Tomorrow, I will be here.” Ava felt warmth in her chest. She felt ready to keep walking. Not fast. Not perfect. But steady. Day by day. Step by step. With love beside her.
She closed her eyes and whispered, “I am healing.” And for once, she believed the words.
