Chapter 2 – Whispers in the Dark
Eleanor sat quietly on the bed that night. Her eyes were tired. Her heart was heavier than ever. She could not forget Victor’s words. “You are old now. Stay home.” Those words kept echoing in her mind. She felt like she was no longer a wife. She felt like she was no longer needed.
Victor was in the other room, laughing softly to himself. She could hear him. She thought, Why is he so cold to me but so warm to someone else?
The next morning, Eleanor saw his phone light up. A message flashed. She only saw one word before he grabbed it. The word was “love.” He quickly put the phone in his pocket. He said, “Don’t touch my things, Eleanor.” His voice was hard. Her lips trembled. She wanted to ask, Who calls you love? Who is she? But her voice broke inside her throat.
That evening, Victor came home late. He smelled of a perfume Eleanor never wore. She whispered to herself, “This is not mine.” He walked past her and said, “I had meetings. Do not ask questions.” She nodded, but her chest burned with pain.
Days passed. The secrets grew larger. Eleanor noticed bills in his jacket. Hotel bills. Expensive dinners for two. She held them in her hands and asked, “Victor, what is this?” He snatched the papers and said, “Work matters. Stop doubting me.” His eyes were cold. Her tears fell.
On her friend’s anniversary, she begged him, “Please come with me. I do not want to go alone.”
He shook his head. “I have work. Go by yourself.”
She whispered, “Do I not deserve one evening with my husband?” He walked away. She stood in silence, her heart breaking.
One night, when Victor was asleep, his second phone rang. Eleanor froze. She did not know he had another phone. She answered with shaking hands. A soft female voice said, “When will you come again? I miss you.” Eleanor could not breathe. She hung up quickly. She placed the phone back. Her hands shook for hours.
The next day she asked gently, “Victor, do you have another phone?” He stared at her and shouted, “Stay out of my life! Stop spying on me.” Her body trembled. She wanted to scream. But she held her tears inside.
The pain kept growing. On her wedding day’s anniversary, he brought her nothing. He only said, “I am leaving tomorrow again.” She whispered, “Do you even remember what today is?” He looked at her for one second and then left the room. Her soul broke once more.
Her neighbor again told her, “I saw him at the café. He was holding a woman’s hand. He looked happy.” Eleanor forced a smile, but inside her heart shattered. She whispered in the night, “Victor, why are you doing this to me? I gave you my life. Why do you give me only lies?”
She searched his drawer one morning. Inside she found old letters. They were from a woman named Diana. The words were full of love. The letters were from years ago, but they spoke about meetings even during Eleanor’s marriage. She held them with trembling hands. She cried, “So it was never only me. Never.”
Victor saw the letters in her hand. His face turned red. He shouted, “How dare you touch my things?” Eleanor said through tears, “Why did you hide this from me? Why did you lie all these years?” He turned away without an answer.
That night Eleanor prayed. She whispered, “God, give me strength. My heart cannot take more.” She lay down with her pillow wet.
The next morning Victor smiled at his phone again. Eleanor watched him. He typed a message quickly, hiding the screen. She asked softly, “Victor, do you still love me?” He looked at her and said nothing. He walked out of the room. Her heart broke again.
Eleanor now knew one truth: the man she lived with was no longer hers. His words were lies. His phone carried secrets. His trips carried hidden stories. She was a wife only in name. Her heart whispered, Soon the whole truth will come out. I cannot live blind forever.
