Chapter 1 – The Day My Heart Chose Him
My name is Eleanor Hartman. I am not young anymore. My hands shake, my eyes are weak, but my memory is still strong. When I close my eyes, I can still see the day my heart made its biggest choice. The day I first met Victor Hale.
I was never a rich girl, but I was proud of what I had. I ran a small shop with my own hands. I was careful, I was responsible, and I thought I knew what life meant. But one single meeting changed everything I believed.
It was during Eid. I was standing with some friends, when suddenly I noticed him. Victor was in the corner of the room, talking to someone. He was not the tallest man, not the richest, not the kind of man people whisper about. But something about his eyes pulled me closer. He looked tired, but also hopeful, as if he wanted someone to see him for who he really was.
He walked toward me. His voice was low but soft. “You don’t seem very happy,” he said. I smiled politely. “I’m fine,” I replied. But I was not fine. Inside, I was shaking. That simple line felt like he had touched a secret part of me.
We began to talk. He told me about his dreams. “I want to do something with my life,” he said. “But no one believes in me. They think I will never make it.” I saw the pain in his eyes. Without thinking, I said, “I believe in you.” His lips trembled. “Do you really?” I nodded. And from that moment, something inside me changed forever.
I went home that night and could not sleep. His face kept coming back to me. His words echoed in my ears. I had never felt like that before. It was not excitement. It was not only attraction. It was something deeper, something that told me I had found the person I wanted to give my life to.
Days turned into weeks. We met again and again. Each time he spoke, I felt closer to him. Once, he held my hand and said, “Eleanor, when you look at me, I feel like I am worth something. You make me believe I can still win in life.” I smiled through nervous tears and whispered, “Because I know you can.”
People around me began to notice. Some warned me. My own family said, “Be careful, Eleanor. He has no money. He has no strong future. You will regret this.” But I was deaf to their voices. In my heart, I had already chosen him.
One evening, Victor asked me to meet him outside. We sat together, and he looked at me with serious eyes. “If I fail, will you still stay? If I fall, will you still hold me?” My chest felt heavy, but I answered without fear. “Yes, Victor. I will stay. I will hold you. I will never leave.” He closed his eyes, and for the first time, I saw peace on his face.
Not long after, we decided to marry. It was not a grand wedding. No gold, no music halls, no big crowds. Just us, standing close, looking into each other’s eyes. When I walked toward him in my simple dress, he whispered, “You are everything I prayed for.” Tears filled my eyes as I said back, “And you are everything I waited for.”
That night, I felt like the happiest woman in the world. I told myself, “Eleanor, this is your forever. You gave him your heart, and he gave you his. Nothing can go wrong now.”
I was wrong. Life was waiting with lessons I did not see coming. Life was waiting with storms. But in that moment, I only saw the calm. I only saw Victor. I only saw love.
